Closure of OPCW

The OPCW-UN Joint Mission in Syria, established on 16 October 2013, oversaw the timely elimination of the Syrian chemical weapons programme in the safest and most secure manner possible. Its mandate concluded on 30 September 2014, and the OPCW mission in Syria continues to deal with the destruction of chemical weapon production facilities.

  • Resolution 2118 (2013) by which the Security Council, inter alia, called for the full implementation of the 27 September decision of the OPCW Executive Council, which contains special procedures for the expeditious and verifiable destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons, authorized an advance team of UN personnel to provide early assistance to the OPCW activities in Syria and requested the Secretary-General to submit to the Council recommendations regarding the role of the United Nations in eliminating the Syrian Arab Republic’s chemical weapons programme [S/RES/2118 (2013)] of 27 September 2013
