OPCW-UN Special Coordinator meets with United States delegation

Nicosia, 11 July 2014 – Ms. Sigrid Kaag, the Special Coordinator for the OPCW-UN Joint Mission met today with a delegation of U.S. officials to discuss progress made with regard to the completion of removal and in-country destruction of Syria's chemical weapons material.

The delegation was headed by Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for EU and NATO Policy Fran Townsend.

The U.S. delegation representatives were briefed on the important milestones and interlocking steps established by the Joint Mission to achieve its mandate, as well as remaining areas of mandate implementation.

The U.S. delegation updated the Joint Mission team on the maritime destruction of the chemical materials on board the MV Cape Ray. The MV Cape Ray is tasked with the neutralization of the most toxic chemical material from Syria and to ensure that it is done with due respect to the environment and public health as per the United Nations and Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons guidelines.
