Closure of OPCW-UN Joint Mission

The OPCW-UN Joint Mission on the elimination of Syrian chemical weapons has completed its mandate and its operations drew to a close on 30 September 2014. From there on, the OPCW mission in Syria will continue to deal with the destruction of chemical weapon production facilities and clarification of certain aspects of the Syrian initial declaration.

6 November 2013 - The OPCW-UN Joint Mission has now verified 22 of the 23 sites. The additional site inspected is in the region of Aleppo and was one of the two sites that could not be visited earlier due to safety and security reasons.

Trans-loading of Syrian chemicals to be undertaken at port of Gioia Tauro in Italy

16 January 2014 - The OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, confirmed today that the Italian Government has agreed to allow the port of Gioia Tauro for priority chemicals brought from Syria by cargo vessels to be trans-loaded onto a U.S. ship, the MV Cape Ray.
